What describes the large cities in India is the huge gap that exists between the poor and the rich. Hyderabad with its 7 million inhabitants is one of them, although the social differences are not as obvious as in other Indian megalopolis such as Kolkata, Delhi where entire urban
districts are mere slums.
The difference is dramatic between the country and the city. Marica School is present in both places. It is an ideal place to discover the diversity of social environments and their contrasts.
Differences show right from the pre primary school. They are so obvious, it's not true! The three volunteers, Anne, Lea and Lizy could clearly witness the life of both extremes of the Indian society. Other volunteers experience the same in Hyderabad.

About health: Anne and Lea assisted the pre primary teacher. They were shocked when they saw how dirty the children were. Their parents do not look after them. Repeatedly, volunteers felt sick. After reporting the fact to Marie Christine, Anne and Lea wrote a notice in the child's diary for the parents: "Kindly give a bath to your child before sending him/her to school or else, they will be denied access to class". The next day, children came back cleaner to school.
Parents do not look after their children: Swetha remained one week without first aid treatment for a wound that was under her foot before the teacher noticed it. Her parents took her to hospital only after receiving the notice from school. Generally, the poorest and most neglected children come from new settlements, settling tribes (these tribes are the lowest groups in the Indian society)
At Tolichowki, Lizy does not see such extreme cases. Children all neat and clean. One day, she talked to a child who was crying; He had just come out of the toilets and could not button up his pants, as his belly was too big. At Marica country school, children having a bulging tummy suffer from malnutrition whereas most children are so lean that their uniform seems for big for them. Malnutrition severely affects the growth of children.
