MARICA
MOBILE Short on money, big on heart
Just a humble rickshaw, two teachers for the 72
children of the Wadas tribes living in the granite
stone quarries. Strawhuts, dust and unhealthy
water is their daily environment. Despite the
best efforts of the team to educate and feed the
little ones, MARICA's children still have to undergo
severe hardships in their quest for knowledge
that will lead them to a
prosperous future. The shortage of funds may deprive
them of a proper classroom yet, the kids here
have no shortage of will to strive ahead in their
pursuit of education. |
On an estate of 2
acres, with 14 classes, MARICA II has a strength of
185 and has a capacity to school 500 children. Most
of the children coming to this institute 12 kms from
Hyderabad stiffer from malnutrition and lack of proper
hygiene. Marie Christine promises them good care,
a very nutritious food supplement and spirulina, clothing,
books and stationery and a good education in English
and their native tongue conforming to the standards
prescribed by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. Here,
dedicated work and the tough resolve to put a smile
back on the faces of the handicapped children is what
makes a polio child walking, cycling and playing with
all their village mates.
MARICA I the oldest
of the 3 schools, operates from a modem building set
at Tolicliowki in Hyderabad. The transfer from the
old residence took place in March 2002. It consists
of 3 floors of well equipped classrooms in a 1000
sq yards campus, half of it being left as a garden.
This new school is in development and should be finished
early 2005. Our students may be very academic and
awards winners or average students seeking a sounding
education or even handicapped and wanting an integrated
education to live in a regular and balanced society.
35 children, challenged with low vision, hearing impairment,
brain damage or sickness, cancer effects, learn happily
in the resource centre and in a regular class. The
teachers work under the guidance of the Ministry of
Education and specialized institutes and use modem
equipment to educate the children in the different
departments.
